After a few big upsets played havoc with most punters AFL round 5 tips – we’re in for a big round of footy this week, with the Saints and Bulldogs kicking things off on Thursday night under lights at Marvel Stadium.

St Kila Saints vs Western Bulldogs Tips

With both teams sitting outside the 8 – there’s plenty to play for this week. The Saints showed promise last week, narrowly going down to the red hot GWS by a single point whilst the dogs continued to struggle to turn talent into wins going down to Essendon by 29 points.
Both teams have had a tough draw to begin the 2024 season, however St Kilda have shown themselves to be closer to the mark. Compounding matters for the dogs, gun midfielder Tom Libertore will miss this week.
There’s not much value to be had betting wise with the line sitting at -2.5. We’re tipping the Saints in a close one.

Adelaide Crows Vs Essendon Bombers Tips

The Crows surprised everyone last week, getting up against ladder leaders Carlton by 2 points in a thrilling game of footy. Essendon are also coming off a solid win, comfortably beating the Bulldogs after being belted by Port Adelaide the previous week.
With the game being played at Adelaide Oval, the Crows will be full of confidence and should have the fire power up forward to kick a big score providing their mids continue the silver service delivery they dished up last week.
Essendon have won the last 3 encounters between these two teams, however given their unpredictable performances and the momentum building win by the Crows last week it’s hard to see them winning this week.

Collingwood Magpies Vs Port Adelaide Power Tips

Last years reigning premiers Collingwood have had a terrible start to their 2024 season, with only 2 wins on the board – including a narrow escape against a rebuilding Hawthorn last week. Port on the other hand are going along nicely, sitting third on the ladder (albeit having played 4 out of the first 5 rounds of the season in Adelaide).
This is shaping up to be a close match with both teams having an elite midfield unit and plenty of quality across the team sheet.
With recent matches between these two being close affairs, we think it will be another tight one this week. The bookies have backed Collingwood in to win however we tip the Power coming out on top by under a goal.

Carlton Blues vs GWS Giants Tips

The Giants are travelling along nicely, sitting top of the premiership ladder after the first 5 rounds – albeit with a slight Asterix attached having played North Melbourne and West Coast early on in the season. Carlton are coming off a tight loss to Adelaide in a game they were widely tipped to win and will be keen to bounce back this week.
This should be one of the best games of the round, with the teams matching up pretty evenly across the ground. The loss of Adam Saad and Mitch McGovern won’t help the Carlton cause, but nevertheless it should be a close one.
Given Carlton’s outs, we’re tipping GWS in a close one and wouldn’t be surprised if we see the first drawn match of 2024.

Brisbane Lions Vs Geelong Cats Tips

Brisbane put in a stirring performance against the widely favored Demons at the MCG last week – putting a rough few weeks behind them with a 22 point win. Geelong on the other hand continue to impress year after year, having started 2024 with a perfect 5 and 0 record.
The Lions chances are boosted by Charlie Cameron escaping suspension at the Tribunal but will miss live wire small forward Zac Bailey who’s out for at least a month with an ankle injury. The Cats will welcome back Tom Hawkins this week after they didn’t bother rolling the big fella out against the Roos last week along with superstar Patrick Dangerfield and Jake Kolodjashni.
The Lions should get it done in front of a big home crowd, however there’s plenty of value to be had for Geelong upset at $2.50 for the win and an +11.5 $1.90 line.
Based on the Lions shaky start to 2024 and the Cats welcoming back some of their top shelf selection, we’re tipping Geelong in an upset

West Coast Eagles Vs Fremantle Dockers Tips

The Eagles stunned the competition last week with an unexpected win at home against the Tigers whereas Fremantle suffered a narrow loss to the Power over in Adelaide.
Emotions always run high in the Western Derby, and with the Eagles receiving a significant confidence boost last week – the result could be closer than expected.
However, it’s hard to go past Fremantle – they’re a much better team on paper and have put in some solid performances so far in 2024.
We’re tipping Fremantle.

Sydney Swans Vs Gold Coast Suns Tips

Gold Coast were impressive last week, beating the Hawks by a healthy 53 points. They dominated the clearances and managed to put 100+ points on the board for the second time this season. The Swans will be fresh after sitting out last week with the bye, however whilst they won their previous two games against West Coast and Richmond, these weren’t convincing victories.
It’s hard to see the young Gold Coast side getting up on this one as Sydney love playing at their home ground and are expected to welcome back Luke Parker from injury.
Either way it should be a high scoring affair on the smaller scale SCG so we like the look of the Total Points Over market at 170.5

North Melbourne Kangaroos Vs Hawthorn Hawks Tips

North Melbourne take on Hawthorn at Marvel Stadium in their regular Sunday afternoon timeslot. Both teams were beaten comprehensively last week, with North coming off a 75 point drubbing from Geelong, whilst the Hawthorne copped a 53 point tune up from the Suns.
Punters eyeing off Wooden Spoon future markets will be watching this one with both teams expected to continue their misery in 2024.
North’s defensive 6 are really letting the young side down and could come under fire against the likes of Ginnivan, Chol and Maginness up forward for the Hawks. However we expect Harry Sheezel to continue getting back to lend a hand and rack up 30+ touches as per usual.
The Kangaroo’s midfield should be the difference in the game and give the Shinboners their first win of 2024 which represents some good value at $3.00
