Based in Sydney, the company was founded by Daniel Simic. Today, it has licences to operate its various online platforms in Australia, New Zealand, India and parts of the United States. It does not, however, own any retail betting outlets.

Yes. PlayUp is licensed in Australia by the Northern Territory Racing and Wagering Commission, with additional accreditation from major international regulators. These include bodies such as the Colorado Division of Gaming, New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement and North Dakota Racing Commission.

It’s not the best-known betting site in the country, but it’s gained a loyal following. You’ll find a handful of negative reviews on Trustpilot, but that place is famous for its over-the-top complaints. Besides, even there PlayUp is held in higher regard than bookies like Sportsbet and Pointsbet.

Okay, let’s kick our PlayUp betting site review off properly, with a detailed look at its features, markets and odds. 

Although it doesn’t have as many sports as the more established Aussies bookies, there are still more than 20 to choose from. This includes all of the country’s most popular competitions, like the AFL, NRL and the Big Bash League.

You’ll find a complete thoroughbred horse racing product, which also lets you bet on harness racing and greyhounds. There aren’t as many esports markets as Picklebet, but you’ll still find a few betting opportunities on games like Dota 2 and League of Legends.

Site Features

PlayUp is a fairly solid betting site, with most key features present – but it would definitely benefit from a few extra tools. For example, there’s no live streaming facility at present, not even for horse racing.

Similarly, you can cash bets out early, but only in full. Most online bookies down under now offer a partial cash out option. On the other hand, PlayUp is an excellent choice for those who enjoy multis. 

Like the majority of sites, same game multis are available on a wide range of the biggest sports. But that’s not all – be sure to check the Multi Express feature, which changes the site’s interface, making it super simple to build huge accumulator bets.

Odds and Markets

PlayUp is very competitive when it comes to odds, and its coverage is deep, though not the deepest. Take international T20 cricket games, for instance, which it prices to 105%. 

Sites like Neds and Labrokes are only fractionally better at 104.5%, while Sportsbet and TAB are less generous at 106%. You’ll find between 50 and 70 betting opportunities on these matches, compared to around 90 at Sportsbet.

This trend continues for most sports. PlayUp prices AFL games to around 105.5%, for example, which is in line with Pointsbet and just behind TAB. However, Ladbrokes and Neds take a bigger cut, with an overround of 106%.

There’s a good choice of deposit methods at PlayUp, with Visa, Mastercard and PayID among them. Unusually, you can also fund your account via bank transfer, as well as cash in selected convenience stores and retail outlets, using the CashUp feature.

The minimum deposit requirement is just $0.10, which is far lower than most online bookmakers in Australia. BPAY and EFTs may require up to 24 hours to reflect in your account balance, but all other deposits are credited instantly. 

In terms of withdrawals, the choice is much more limited – it’s just bank transfers and PayID, and the minimum amount is $10. Payouts are only processed Monday to Friday – holidays excluded – until 4pm. 

Again, EFTs may take 24 hours to complete (up to 72 hours if it’s over a weekend) but PayID withdrawals are instant.

The PlayUp sports betting app is available for Android and iOS from the official marketplaces, as well as links on the homepage. It scores reasonably well, but not as highly as bookies like Neds, for instance.

Android users rate the software 3.7* from over 10,000 downloads, while the Apple equivalent scores 4.0* from just 370 ratings.

You won’t find any PlayUp bonus codes, because the local regulator forbids signup incentives like deposit match offers and free bets. That’s not to say existing customers can’t acquire bonuses though – you just have to log into your account to see them.

If you successfully pass the automated verification process, you’re free to go about your business. However, if PlayUp is unable to verify your details, you must provide further ID documentation before accessing the account.

We like PlayUp a lot – especially the clean user interface and the generous odds on AFL games. If it would just incorporate a few minor changes, it could easily become one of the biggest online bookmakers in Australia.

Live streams of racing would be a great start, along with partial cash out and a few extra payment methods. But overall, this an above-average site in terms of features, odds and markets, that doesn’t find ways to avoid paying winners like some bookies seem to.
